A2P 10DLC - Where, How, and When do I Start?
Let's start with when to start - START NOW, IMMEDIATELY! We refer to new A2P rules as the "A2Pocalypse". It may seem daunting at first, especially for those that have been playing the SMS and MMS game for a while. AT&T started to implement their A2P changes on May 1st 2021 and T-Mobile on June 1st, 2021. Their changes initially were simply adding fees, a per carrier fee. While nobody is happy about these new fees, the fees themselves are easily overcome. The REAL challenge is when the carriers start to enforce the new A2P rules. When carriers start to enforce these rules, businesses will not be able to deliver SMS or MMS messages if they have not; 1) Registered their Business, 2) Registered all 10DLC (10 digit long code phone numbers), and 3) registered their messaging use-cases. Both AT&T and T-Mobile have publicly announced they will begin to enforce the rules at the end of the transition, reportedly sometime between August 16th and September 1st, 2021.
Where to start? The majority of the agencies we work with use Twilio as their programmable voice and SMS service provider therefore our instructions are Twilio-centric. If you use Amazon or Google for delivering SMS or MMS we have content available on other pages. So, WHERE TO START? It all starts in your Twilio account, specifically at the MASTER ACCOUNT.
How to start? We could write a novel on this, but we won't. Instead, click the link below for our Twilio setup video. The video is about 1 hour and 15 minutes. If you "play, pause, do" you will be able to finish in 1-2 hours. That said, you will NOT be able to finish in one sitting, each step is dependent on previous steps and some steps require Twilio approval before proceeding to the next step. PLEASE NOTE: This video was done in June 2021, one recommendation in the video has been updated -> DO NOT, REPEAT DO NOT, USE YOUR MASTER ACCOUNT TO SEND MESSAGES. YOUR MASTER ACCOUNT WILL BE SETUP AS AN ISV (RESELLER) AND YOUR SUB-ACCOUNTS AS DIRECT BRANDS. USE SUB-ACCOUNTS TO SEND ALL MESSAGES.
